Make A Cover For Your Stroller Lap Bar From A Lululemon Bag
No planning went into this project. I spotted the Lululemon bag, realized it would be the perfect material to cover our battered stroller lap bar, and grabbed my sewing kit. The whole thing took me about a hour, start to finish. The great part about using this bag is that you can borrow the stitching and seams of the bag to make the cover look machine sewn - even though all you used was a needle, black thread, scissors, and six pins.
Let me start with a warning though: I have no idea what materials the Lululemon bag is made of, so if your child is in the teething stage, best to steer clear of this. For all I know, it may have chemicals in it that aren't good for baby. Our tubaloo isn't much of a biter anymore, so I'm using this as a decorative, wipable cover for a bar that was previously teethed to death.
You might wonder why I needed a cover for my lap bar. For some reason, stroller manufacturers think that a foam-like material is great for the lap bar. This turned out to be teething heaven for the tubaloo, who bit and tore at it in several places. I finally just took it off and have been strolling without the bar.
I had been wanting to cover it, but I didn't want it to look ... amateur, I guess. And I thought a cloth cover would look a bit amateur. Enter the Lululemon bag. The material seems like fabric with a plastic coating. It looks sort of industrial, which I'm hoping will look hip with our black stroller. And the material is full of nifty little sayings about exercise and being good to the planet. It appears wipeable and bite proof. We'll see.
Instructions
Step 1: Gather a lululemon bag (We have a small one, that is red, white, and black, has a black handle, and a snap at the top), scissors, black thread, needle, and about 6 pins.
Step 2: Cut out the back panel of the Lululemon bag - make sure to include the top and bottom seam in your cut-out. You don't want to have to make your own seams - that would take too much time. Also, cut off one of the black handles - This will cover the edges where the cover comes together - so that you won't see the rough edges.
Step 3: Wrap the cover around the the lap bar, with the hemmed edges at either end, and the cut edges overlapping along the length of the bar. Whether you choose to make it tight or loose, try to make sure tension is pretty even along the bar.
I arranged the edges to overlap on the side of the bar facing away from baby, because I didn't want the tubaloo to be tempted to pick at the seam. Then lie the black bag handle along the seam where the cut endges overlap, covering them. Tuck the ends of the handle under the cover at either end, so that you have no cut edges showing. Pin it all down.
Step 4: Sew it all together, by sewing along the stitching of the handle. The bag handle strap already has a line of stitching going down each edge. If you sew along that line, you don't have to make your stitching look pretty, because it will blend in with the stitching that's already there - as long as the thread is the same color.
Stitching Tips
Tip 1: Tie all your knots in places they won't show. When you start your stitching, make sure to tie your knot on the underside of the cover.
If you run out of thread halfway down the bar, put an extra stitch in the cover next to your last one, under the black handle piece. Tie a knot using the extra loop you created. The knot will lie between the layers.
Tip 2: Be careful not to catch the actual lap bar underneath the cover with your needle. This is probably the hardest part - it would be nice to have a curved needle. Take it slow: try putting the needle through one layer of fabric at a time.
On some parts, another needle can help you to lift the fabric when you're inserting the needle, and push the fabric down when you're pushing it back out again.
Tip 3: After each stitch, pull it taught (but not too tight!) and make sure that everything is lying straight.
