Everyday Solutions

No planning went into this project. I spotted the Lululemon bag, realized it would be the perfect material to cover our battered stroller lap bar, and grabbed my sewing kit.  The whole thing took me about a hour, start to finish. The great part about using this bag is that you can borrow the stitching and seams of the bag to make the cover look machine sewn - even though all you used was a needle, black thread, scissors, and six pins. Let me start with a warning though: I have no idea what materials the Lululemon bag is made of, so if your child is in the teething stage, best to steer clear of this. For all I know, it may have chemicals in it that aren't good for…

How To Burrito Wrap Your Baby

Swaddling the Great Tubaloo in the "burrito-wrap" style was one of the most important things we did in the early days of parenthood.  This swaddling style was key for us because it was easy to learn and worked wonderfully. The problem with the traditional style, where you start with a sort of diamond shape and fold a corner over, is that it's difficult to learn.  I'm sure it works for many people, but I had tried learning it long before I had a baby, and it never really clicked for me.  When the Tubaloo was born, our delivery room nurse, who had five kids of her own, swaddled him in the burrito-wrap style right after birth, and we've never looked back. The most recent was after the Tubaloo was born, and I was frustrated because nursing wasn't the magical weight-loss solution than everyone had told me it would be. My husband and I put our heads together and came up with a weight loss plan that actually worked for me (I lost about 20lbs that had stayed on while I was nursing.)  Since then, I've pretty much stayed at the same weight.  Thinking back, I also lost quite a bit of weight in college using the same principles, although I didn't know I was doing it at the time. So, I guess I have a lot of confidence that's it's a pretty…

The Art of Throwing Things Away

Have you ever found yourself debating whether or not a plastic container labeled 7 could be put in the bin? Or ever wondered if you really need to rinse things out before you recycle them? Or ever debated whether to throw something grimy and gross in the trash, down the sink, or in the gutter? There are so many little decisions to be made when throwing things away, and I think most of us probably decide out of habit.  You're probably still handling trash the same way you were taught by your mom, or whoever it was that first introduced you to a recycling bin.  What's wrong with that? The problem is that cities update the way they handle waste all the time. Knowledge about the impact we're having on…
